Indigo Supreme Court News: No Urgent Hearing on Massive Flight Cancellation Crisis

The Indigo Supreme Court proceedings on Monday, December 8, 2025, brought attention to the ongoing crisis of flight cancellations by IndiGo airlines. The apex court declined to grant an urgent hearing to a plea seeking judicial intervention, stating that the government has already taken steps to address the situation.

Chief Justice Surya Kant, heading the bench alongside Justice Joymalya Bagchi, acknowledged the gravity of the situation. “It is a serious matter. Lakhs of passengers are stranded at various airports,” the Chief Justice noted during the hearing. “We are aware of potential health and safety concerns, and we recognize that the government has taken timely action to manage this disruption.”

Lawyers representing affected passengers emphasized that IndiGo’s flight cancellations had not been communicated properly to travelers, leaving thousands stranded across the country. The plea highlighted that nearly 2,500 flights had been delayed or canceled at 95 airports, causing widespread inconvenience and disruption.

According to reports, the disruptions entered their seventh consecutive day on December 8. Delhi Airport alone saw 134 flights canceled, including 75 departures and 59 arrivals. Similarly, Bengaluru Airport experienced 117 cancellations, affecting both arrivals and departures. The ongoing crisis has created a logistical challenge for travelers and airport authorities alike.

The airline attributed these cancellations to regulatory changes in pilots’ flight duty rules, citing compliance requirements. Despite these explanations, public dissatisfaction has been mounting, prompting widespread discussion about passenger rights and airline accountability.

The Indigo Supreme Court refusal to hear the plea urgently underscores the judiciary’s reliance on the government and regulatory bodies to handle the operational crisis. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has reportedly granted IndiGo a 24-hour extension to respond to a show-cause notice, while also closely monitoring the airline’s operations to prevent further disruptions.

As the situation continues to unfold, passengers are urged to check flight schedules and seek official updates directly from IndiGo. Government agencies and airline authorities are coordinating to minimize further inconvenience and to provide refunds where necessary.

The Indigo Supreme Court decision reflects the broader challenge of balancing judicial intervention with administrative oversight in large-scale operational crises. While passengers face immediate inconvenience, authorities maintain that the steps taken will restore stability in the airline’s network and prevent future disruptions.
