Eminem will kick off the 2024 VMAs with a live performance on Wednesday, September 11, at 8 p.m. ET/PT from New York’s UBS Arena. He will debut tracks from his 12th studio album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grace), which recently soared to No. 1 on the Billboard 200, marking his 11th chart-topping album.
Eminem’s last VMAs appearance was in 2022, where he and Snoop Dogg delivered a groundbreaking performance of “From the D 2 The LBC,” inspired by the Otherside metaverse. Previously, in 2012, he made a surprise appearance during Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg’s set of “Forgot About Dre” and “Still D.R.E.”
Eminem has opened the VMAs before, notably with “Not Afraid” in 2010 and a duet with Rihanna on “Love the Way You Lie.” His memorable 2000 performance featured a medley of “The Real Slim Shady” and “The Way I Am,” complete with a parade of Eminem look-alikes. He also performed “Guilty Conscience” and “My Name Is” during his debut year in 1999.
This year, Eminem received eight nominations, including Video of the Year and Best Hip-Hop for his hit “Houdini,” which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. A win in any category would set him apart from Peter Gabriel for the most VMA wins by a male artist, with 13 total. He is currently tied with Gabriel; Beyoncé holds the record with 27 wins, followed by Taylor Swift with 23.
The 2024 VMAs will feature performances by Megan Thee Stallion, who will also host, and Katy Perry, who will receive the Video Vanguard Award. Other performers include Anitta (featuring Fat Joe, DJ Khaled, and Tiago PZK), Benson Boone, Camila Cabello, and many more. Cyndi Lauper, who won at the very first VMAs in 1984, will present alongside Carson Daly, with additional presenters including Addison Rae, Big Sean, and Lil Nas X.
Teddy Swims and Jessie Murph will make their VMA debuts on the Extended Play Stage, while Le Sserafim will perform during the VMAs pre-show, hosted by Nessa, Dometi Pongo, and Kevan Kenney. The show will air live across MTV’s network of channels and platforms.
Taylor Swift leads this year’s nominations with 12, followed by Post Malone with 11 and Eminem with eight. Voting for Best New Artist remains open through the show.
Bruce Gillmer and Jesse Ignjatovic serve as executive producers, with Barb Bialkowski as co-executive producer, and Alicia Portugal and Jackie Barba overseeing production. Wendy Plaut and Lisa Lauricella are responsible for celebrity and music talent, respectively.
