Artem Chigvintsev, a former Strictly Come Dancing star, has been detained in the United States on allegations of domestic assault.

The Russian dancer, who won the BBC competition in 2010 with celebrity partner Kara Tointon, was detained Thursday morning in California.

Officer Henry Wofford of the Napa County Sheriff’s Office told Sky News’ partner network NBC that Chigvintsev was arrested after police responded to a domestic violence incident in Yountville soon after 10 a.m. local time (7 p.m. GMT).

The 42-year-old dancer was taken to the Napa County Department of Correction and detained. His bail was set at $25,000 (£19,000).

Details concerning potential injuries could not be released, but Mr Wofford stated that a felony domestic violence arrest is made when deputies see or notice injuries.
The Russian dancer joined Strictly in 2010 for series eight, where he was paired with ex-EastEnders actress Tointon, a partnership that grew into a real-life romance over several years.

He was last teamed with Coronation Street star Natalie Gumede in 2013, where they secured the runner-up slot in the competition.
